I have an uncle who years ago passed away. Several months prior to his death I visited with him. He was getting feeble and knew his time on earth was coming to an end. However, he said something to me that I have never forgotten. With as much assurance as I am writing this article he remarked, “I have people waiting for me.”
People on the verge of passing have sometimes said that they can see heaven or loved ones gone before. Some have reportedly seen Jesus. Near death or out-of-body experiences are much more than rare. There have been numerous accounts of people in the hospital close to death whose souls or spirits have risen out of and above their physical bodies. They have observed what is transpiring in the room, seeing doctors and nurses working on their body beneath them. And these are sane, intelligent, and rational people.
These accounts and many others like them prove that there is a conscious dimension to life after physical death on this earth. No, we don’t just cease to exist, as some like to believe. This backs up the Christian teaching that we have bodies and souls, and for Christians, the Holy Spirit living within. Though our physical bodies die, our souls continue on. Not only does this give evidence that a conscious eternal life is possible, but it provides hope that previously deceased loved ones will be seen again.
There is a God. Humans have souls. Souls have eternal conscious existence. The only question is where will your soul spend eternity? You can know with confidence, like my uncle did, that you are going to heaven and that loved ones are “waiting” for you. I John 5:11-13 tells us, ” And the witness is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life.”
