People often say that no one knows the day nor the hour when Jesus will return. That is a very true, for the Bible itself says it. However, it is possible to know the general time in history. Within the pages of the Bible are scattered hundreds of prophecies. Many of them have already literally come true with 100 percent accuracy. Jesus fulfilled over 300 of them.
One of the primary ways that we can know that the Bible is the divinely inspired word of God is by fulfilled prophecies that are being witnessed in the current events. The prophecies listed below have all been, or are in the process of being fulfilled in my generation! They are the more obvious ones. There are many more that prophecy scholars know about. The verses used are by no means exhaustive. Many more could be cited from throughout scripture.
1. Knowledge will increase, and people will be busy moving about.
Daniel 12:4, which is in the context of a chapter dealing with the end times, says that “many will go back and forth, and knowledge will increase.” (All quotes are from the NASV). Look at how much advancement was made in just the last century, since 1900. The automobile was invented, then the airplane, then we sent men to the moon and into outer space with the space shuttle. We have gone from the television to the internet, and from old dial phones to cell phones. Now we are seeing robotics, microchipping, and artificial intelligence, along with images that can speak, coming into use. And these are just a few examples of a much broader picture.
2. The nation of Israel will be a troublesome spot in the world
Zechariah 12:2-3 says, “Behold, I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that causes reeling to all the peoples…I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples… and all the nations of the earth will be gathered against it” (emphasis mine). The world is trying to divide the land of Israel. An alliance of several nations is forming to destroy it. There is continual fighting over control of the Temple Mount.
3. There will be an increase in earthquake activity.
“In various places there will be…earthquakes” (Matthew 24:7). Anyone who is up on what is happening knows that there has been a tremendous increase in the frequency and intensity of earthquakes in various places around the world.
“Because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold” (Matthew 24:12). It is very obvious from the news that in the last several years lawlessness has increased, with disorder, rioting, and no regard for law enforcement by some. In the U.S. there are some politicians who no longer regard the U.S. Constitution as the law of the land.
5. People call evil good, and good evil.
In the last days there will be “haters of good.” This is prophesied in II Timothy 3:3. “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil” it says in Isaiah 5:20.
6. The days prior to the return of Christ will be like in the days of Noah.
This is stated in Matthew 24: 37-39. When we refer back to Genesis 6:11 we read, “Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence.” The continual violence we see in the world today was not a common occurrence decades ago, or even ten years ago.
7. There will be hatred of Christians.
Matthew 24:9 says that Christians “will be hated by all nations on account of My name.”Persecution of Christians is at an all time high. Even the United States was on the list of nations which persecutes Christians for the first time, in 2017.
8. Christians will be brought before government authorities.
This is stated in Luke 21:12. Anyone who knows anything about current events has witnessed Christian bakers and flower shop owners being taken to court. There are more law suits being filed against Christians and Christian causes than anytime in my life time.
9. Powerful storms have been prophesied.
Luke 21: 25 says there will be “perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves.” Consider the dramatic increase in powerful hurricanes, and the numerous category five storms. The recent record-breaking hurricanes have even baffled some weather forecasters.
Yes, even terrorism is part of prophecy. Luke 21:11 has the phrase, “there will be terrors.”
Revelation 20:4 soberly states, “…And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of the testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God.
12. Nuclear War.Zechariah 14:12 gives a perfect description of the effects of nuclear warfare. “…their flesh will rot while they stand on their feet, and their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouth.” At some point in the future there will be nuclear war. Even though this verse is in the context of war with Israel, we all know what is happening right now with North Korea and other countries that have nuclear arms and have evil intentions.
13. The Rebuilding of the Third Jewish Temple.
During the Tribulation Period there will be a Jewish Temple. This is prophesied in Revelation 11:1, “…Rise and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and those who worship in it.” Plans have been drawn up for the temple, and the implements used for worship have been recreated, including the altar. Priests are being trained for entering the holy of holies. Much more could be said.
14. A Great Deception and the Dramatic Rise of Satan Worship.
“But the Spirit explicity says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons” (I Timothy 4:1). There is a huge rise in satan worship, and all forms of the occult.
15. A Departure From the Christian Faith.
This is expressed in I Timothy 4:1 and Matthew 24:10. Some individuals, Christian organizations, and church denominations that one would never expect to depart from the faith have done so. Many Christians have compromised their beliefs to political correctness.
Revelation 13: 16-17 says that the day will come when each individual will be given some kind of “…mark on their right hand or on their forehead” and without it one will not be able to buy or sell. This is associated with the number 666. Some companies have already microchipped their employees in their right hand, leaving a mark. With it they are able to buy things out of the vending machines simply by waving their hand! This is not the mark of the beast – yet. But it begs the question as to whether this could be leading up to it.
The good news is that “the saints of the Highest One will receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, for all ages to come” (Daniel 7:18). Will you be one of them? Accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior today.
